Birrieria Liz in Puerto Vallarta

Birrieria Liz Puerto Vallarta

As I’ve mentioned, I’m all about food on this trip. So my second stop in Puerto Vallarta was Birrieria Liz. I think the official name might be Birrieria y Taqueria Liz, but there is no mistake about what you are getting when it comes to tacos at Liz. This is some true, authentic Mexican food. You know it’s good when you see locals stop by for some tacos and consomé.

Birria Meat

To appreciate Birrieria Liz, you have to first know what birria is. In Mexico, it is a type of stewed meat. Sometimes this is found in cow (or res), but it can also be found in goat (or chivo). In either case, the meat is stewed to ensure it is always extra juicy and full of flavor. The stew is made with a chili pepper broth to give it extra flavor. This flavor can also be served with the meat and is often called consomé. This particular style of cooking meat comes from Jalisco, Mexico – which is where Puerto Vallarta is.

Birrieria Liz on Panama Street

As part of the downtown area, walking the streets of Puerto Vallarta will lead you to a surprise on every block. When turning onto Panama Street just off the beach, you’ll find Birrieria Liz on the north side before reaching C. Peru. More than likely you’ll see tents setup outside on the street or sidewalk to avoid cooking inside as the restaurant is open-air and only has ceiling fans. On the street you’ll find workers making fresh tortillas, tending a pot of birria, and enjoying life. Step inside and you’ll find picnic tables as well as a beautiful mural on the wall listing their food and prices. For 66 pesos, I was able to grab two birria tacos and a Mexican coke. At the time, that was about $3.66 in US dollars.

Deliciousness

To be honest, I had no idea what birria was, other than people recommending it. So I didn’t know what to expect. However, for me, it turned out to be one of the most flavorful and tasty things I’ve eaten. I have a vast appreciation for Mexican food and I always remember some of the best. I have zero doubts about my number 1 mexican food (I ate it for almost 15 years). My number 2 favorite was awesome and I only have had it twice. I’m going to place Birrieria Liz at number 3. We’re not talking about best in Puerto Vallarta or my home state of Oklahoma. I’m talking about travel the world and try to find the absolute best food out there.

The meat was flavorful and juicy. The tortillas are fried to be nice and crispy. The table has typical cilantro and onions. There are salsa available if you want. The only thing needed is a little cup of consomé and you are ready to eat. Did I mention the meat was flavorful? The resturant may not look like much by first-world standards, but sink your teeth into one of these birria tacos from Birrieria Liz and you will know what amazing food tastes like.
